The Office of Alumni and Career Services is pleased to announce the Summer Fellowship program again this year for students
working as a volunteer in the Public Sector. The Placement Committee will select the Fellows by the end of April and present
the stipends by the first of May. The number and the amount of each stipend will depend on how much money we raise at the
auction. You may apply for a stipend even if your job is pending at the time of the deadline. You must confirm your employment
to us in writing from your employer before we can award a check to you for the summer.
A public interest position is defined as working for:
Non-profit organizations or legal aid offices representing under-represented clients, groups or interests (e.g. the poor, elderly, minority groups, etc.)
Government agencies, including public defenders, prosecutors, civil rights or consumer rights groups.
Clerking for a judge but not receiving credit for this position.
Criteria for selection:
Public Interest Commitment
A principal criterion for selection is a demonstrated commitment to a public service career. This commitment may be demonstrated by a number of factors, including participation in public interest activities in college or after college, and participation in public interest activities in law school.
While demonstrated commitment is a principal criterion for being awarded a grant, consideration will also be given to applicants who may not have amassed a substantial public interest record but who have demonstrated their commitment in other ways and/or have explained the circumstances that may have deterred them from participation in such activities in the past.
Application Process:
Applications may be picked up in the Law Career Services office or you can download the application from the Career Services web page. (Just follow the instructions). Interested students must submit an application, a one page essay and a resume to Law Alumni and Career Services by Tuesday, April 15, 2008.
