"Helping students participate in
summer positions giving back to those
who are most in need in our communities” |
-Providing Students
Opportunities-
- To
Change Communities -
Over the past ten years, Law Career Services has sponsored the Public Interest program raising and awarding over $50,000 in Summer Public Interest Fellowship Stipends to over 50 students. The Fellows have applied and been chosen by a committee of faculty and administration for their past involvement in Public Interest as well as their desire to continue Public Interest after graduation from law school. These students participate in non-profit summer programs assisting those in the community who are most in need: abused women and children, individuals impaired physically and mentally, the aged, minorities and other underprivileged persons and groups.
The program began in 1994 and each year it has been able to help students to pursue their goals and dreams of becoming public interest attorneys.
Law students at Ohio Northern University College of Law continue the history of public service in actively seeking ways to make a difference in our society.

- The Public Interest Auction Is For Everyone -
Faculty, Students, Community & Alumni
The Office of Law Career Services has sponsored The Public Interest Auction/Raffle over the past ten years to help provide stipends for Summer Public Interest Fellowships that aid students in unpaid summer positions serving the public. Alumni, businesses, individuals, students and student organizations along with faculty and administriation are invited to participate in the auction by donating and bidding on items. All are invited to attend the complimentary luncheon that precedes the auction. Cash donations for the cost of the luncheon are always appreciated. This program has been designed to encourage participation from every individual interested in helping our communities. The auction offers fun, excitement, good food, education incentives for students and support for Public Interest programs across the nation. It also offers the community an opportunity to meet and network with our law students as they help in a very worthy endeavor.

Student Fellowship Information -
A public interest position is definable as working for the following:
1) Non-profit organizations or legal aid offices that represent under-represented clients (e.g. poor, elderly), groups or interests (e.g. minority groups).
2) Government agencies, including public defenders, prosecutors, civil rights or consumer rights groups.
3) Clerking for a judge but not receiving credit for this position.
Criteria for Selection
Public Interest Commitment: A principal criterion for selection is a demonstrated commitment to a public service career. A number of factors, including participation in public interest activities in college or following college, and participation in public interest activities in law school, may demonstrate this commitment.
Applicants receive consideration who may not have amassed a substantial public interest record but who have demonstrated their commitment in other ways and/or have explained the circumstances that may have deterred them from participation in such activities in the past.
Application Process: You may pick up applications in the Law Career Services office or you can download the application from the Career Services web page. Interested students must submit:
